Real reason Ben Affleck’s daughter Violet wears masks in public as newest plea thrusts her into spotlight

In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing face masks became a daily routine for many of us.

Although Covid is still present, a significant number of people have chosen to live their day-to-day lives without masks.

Recently, the UK Health and Security Agency released updated statistics on 18th September, indicating 1,664 cases, 79 deaths, and 1,162 hospital admissions.

Yet, it’s evident that Ben Affleck's daughter, Violet, has not ceased wearing her mask.

In fact, Violet has recently taken a stand against mask bans with her latest health plea, bringing her back into the public eye.

Who is Violet Affleck?

Violet is the eldest child of Affleck and Jennifer Garner.

She is also a sibling to the Hollywood couple's other two children: Seraphina, 16, and Samuel, 13.

The 19-year-old is currently pursuing a degree in public health at Yale University. She recently published a paper in Yale's Global Health Review comparing responses to the LA wildfires and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why does she wear a mask?

Violet has been frequently seen wearing a mask since being diagnosed with a 'post-viral condition' in 2019, as she mentioned in her speech to the LA County Board of Supervisors last year.

"I’m OK now, but I saw firsthand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses," she stated.

This experience, she explained, is why she continues to wear a mask in public—even after mandates were lifted.

She further argued against banning masks, stating they 'do not make us safer', but rather make 'vulnerable members of our community less safe'.

She has also advocated for the county to 'increase the availability of high-quality free tests and treatment, and most importantly, to oppose mask bans for any reason'.

What did she say at the UN?

Violet was also seen wearing a mask at the event on Tuesday (23 September), where she urged world leaders to take airborne illnesses seriously and emphasized that the fight against long COVID is not over.

"It is neglect of the highest order to look children in the eyes and say, 'We knew how to protect you, and we didn’t do it,'" she stated, criticizing society's rush to return to 'normal' while ignoring ongoing risks.

The teen also argued that clean air should be recognized as a human right, akin to clean water, adding: "We can create clean air infrastructure that is so ubiquitous and necessary that tomorrow’s children won’t even question its existence."

"Long COVID has become more common than asthma as a chronic illness in children under five," Violet continued, expressing her fear for children who 'will not know a world without debilitating pain and exhaustion' after experiencing COVID.

"Young people lacked both real choice in the matter and information about what was being chosen for us," she added.

"We are constantly told by leaders that we are the future. Yet, regarding the ongoing pandemic, our present is being taken right in front of us."

What have people said about her UN speech?

Violet's speech did not sit well with Meghan McCain, the daughter of John McCain, US senator from Arizona and the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, who took to social media to criticize the teen's address.

"Everything about this is exactly why people dislike nepo babies so much," the 40-year-old former The View co-host wrote in her post.

She continued: "She has no business speaking at the UN," adding that "what she is speaking about is patently absurd."

McCain, who refers to herself as a 'nepo baby' in her X bio, only kept the post up for a few minutes before taking it down.

However, many were quick to highlight the irony in McCain's post, with one X user noting: "Is that the Meghan McCain who constantly reminds people that Senator McCain is her dad?"

"Meghan McCain talking about Nepo Babies as if she isn’t the Boss Nepo Baby is wild," echoed another.
